Marlins Through The Years

  • 1964

Ann and Bill Marlin were looking for a property out in the country. They came across a beautiful home with an apple farm, and decided to make the move from Cornwall. Along with their young daughters Diane and Susan, the Marlin family began to grow this small apple farm into a flourishing business.

  • May 5th, 1972

One afternoon, a car traveling along County Road 2 lost control of their vehicle, and crashed into the apple stand. Diane was in the stand tuning up her bicycle. She was able to escape just as the car demolished the apple stand.

  • 1973

The Marlin family decided to rebuild the apple stand at the top of Orchard Road, beside the orchard. They built the store, along with a refrigeration room that gave them the capability to expand the orchard and apple storage.

  • 1974

With the apple farm doing well, Ann and Bill wanted to expand their business and add another element that would work around the schedule of apple growing. They decided to build a few cold frames, and start growing plants. Over the years, the cold frames expanded to greenhouses and the development of a full nursery began.

  • 1989

Ann and Bill’s daughter, Diane, along with her husband George Lunan, purchased the business and took over as the second generation. The Lunans expanded the garden centre into a complete garden centre with annuals, vegetable plants, trees and shrubs. Fields were worked up to grow pumpkins and gourds to sell in the fall months. They also started a home décor area of the store, featuring giftware for the home, as well as outdoor garden features.

  • 2014

Marlin Orchards celebrated its 50th anniversary! The 3rd generation was well underway, as Diane and George’s three children, Kris, Alexandra and Hannah were all working on the family farm. The Marlins apiary was big enough to extract and sell fresh honey, and the business continued to grow.
